Jake Shields beat Paul Daley with a second-round arm bar to retain the EliteXC welterweight title in an impressive display of jiu jitsu tonight.After they exchanged some strikes in the first round, Shields took the fight to the ground, which is where he likes it. He dominated with a ground-and-pound in full mount for most of the first round, although late in the round he had an unsuccessful submission attempt, which allowed Daley to get on top and land some elbows.
The mere fact that the fight lasted into the second round was unusual for Shields, who had won five straight fights in the first round. But Shields won the fight by going back to the ground in the second and landing an arm bar that Daley couldn't escape.
Shields, who is widely regarded as the best welterweight outside the UFC, improved his professional MMA record of 22-4-1. Daley falls to 18-7-2.
Shields said after the fight that he'd like to move up to 185 pounds and challenge EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler. In terms of pure MMA skill, that might be the single best fight EliteXC could put together.

this guy's hype is just one more example of how much of a joke elitexc is. First of all who can watch that and not have to press the info button on their remote to make sure that its not the wwf.with all their midfight interviews and breaking news im suprised that they dont have opponents sneaking up behind them with a steel chair. with that said, iono how any of these "mma experts" that rank this guy in the top 5 welterweights. he is terrible. his standup looks like a 12 year old whose scared out of his mind fighting his older brother. when he went to the ground maybe he knows more about jujidsu than whoever that british guy was but he ddint need to. he didnt use one technical move to pass his guard, im not sure that the british guy understood that letting a guy walk into a mount is a bad idea in a fight. basically the fight was who is more terrible at what and the brit was more terrible on the ground. now put Jake Shields in a match with the worst welterweight in the ufc. im sure that guy knows that there is such thing as a sprawl so even if he knows absolutely jack about the ground game then he will just overmatch him on his feet. or if it is someone who is absolutely not horrendous at jujidsu then they will just not fall to the most obvious armbar attempt ive ever seen land. i wanted to see elitexc to watch the freaks and hoped i would see some mediocre mma and all i saw was some hyped up amatures that were not matched up well at all. I WILL NEVER WASTE ANOTHER SECOND OF MY LIFE WATCHING ELITEXC
